Our goal as a responsible breeder is to produce Cavalier King Charles Spaniels of excellent temperament, sound health, and correct type in accordance with the AKC breed standard. Each breeding is thoughtfully planned, with careful consideration given to structure, temperament, and overall well being. We actively participate in AKC conformation events to evaluate our dogs against the breed standard and to continually improve our breeding program. To support informed breeding decisions, our dogs receive annual health testing, including OFA heart evaluations by a board certified cardiologist, eye certification by a board certified ophthalmologist, and OFA patella certification. All breeding dogs are also DNA tested for Curly Coat Dry Eye and Episodic Falling Syndrome.
Our Story
My name is Janet Gambrell, and I am a second-generation breeder. My parents showed and bred German Shepherds in the 70’s. I have grown up in and around the show world since I was a young girl. Sonesta Cavaliers was established in 2001 by my mentor and dear friend, Rebecca Pennington, whom I respect and learned so much from. Rebecca mentored me for several years and I started breeding Sonesta Cavaliers alongside her eighteen years ago. Sonesta Cavaliers is located near Conroe and is closely situated to the Woodlands and Houston area.
I serve as a board member of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Greater Houston (CKCSCGH) and am a member of the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club (ACKCSC). My goal as a breeder is to be a continual student of the breed. I respect the breeders that came before me, and I strive to be an educator to breeders that come after me. Outreach for our breed should be done with an open willingness to educate.
I am a small show breeder and only breed a few liters a year. All my dogs are truly part of my family. They all live inside my home and are under foot everywhere I go. They take over the furniture, lay under the table at dinnertime and have free access to our home. They love chasing butterflies and are expert squirrel hunters. They are known by name at Ace Hardware and are highly offended if they are not offered a treat at check out. The puppies are well socialized, are crate trained and well on their way with potty training by the time they go to their new homes. All puppies are sold on a limited registration(spay/neuter) contract. I require visits to my home for all puppy buyers. It is important for both parties to know each other and have a comfort level with each before taking the puppy home. I put my heart and soul into the well-being of all my puppies and truly want the best for them. I offer support for the lifetime of my puppies. When you get one of my puppies, you become part of the Sonesta family.
